![]() ![]() The Black tiles represent nobles (early Gaul’s did have “kings” per se). Suits correspond to Gallic societal strata Rhine & Rhone 4-player setup at the start of the game.Ģ. This has been working well and keeps your hand fuller during the round (which is a nice minor twist that keeps your options open). Mechanically, the way I have it working is that to place a tile you pick up a face down tile (adding it to your hand) and then place a different tile onto the board face-up. Since the board is effectively modular, this opens up possibilities to scale the size of the board to the player count, experiment with different layouts, etc. The cards are pretty small (1.75” x 2.5”), so half the size of a normal poker card. 18 of the cards are “river” cards and represent the Rhine and Rhone rivers. Like Y&Y, this is based on a hexagonal arrangement of cards. These cards are arranged facedown to form the play area. Instead of a board with a bag of tiles, the game uses a deck of cards as board and tiles. ![]() Give it a read and I’d love input on what people think would strike the right balance.ġ. The following itemizes the major design changes and mechanics used by R&R and how it varies from its predecessors, with the caveat that this is all a work-in-progress. Thus begins the process of “remapping” the mechanics and components from the earlier games to this new Rhine & Rhone concept. Map of the Gaul territories and Helvetii tribe areas. The Helvetii specifically were driven out almost entirely at one point by Roman aggression. This is a gross simplification, but the tribes of Gauls were cajoled by the Romans through political manipulation and military force, which often resulting in tribal disagreements over leadership as well as direct displacement and fracturing of tribal cohesion. The map below depicts some of the Gallic territory around the 1st Century BCE, with the Helvetii tribe inhabiting much of area in and around the Swiss Alps. Needless to say, the history of the Gauls provided a great opportunity to ground the game’s design in something more tangible. It provided an overview of the Gallic wars between the Roman Empire and the tribes of Gauls across much of what is southern France southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland today - incidentally nestled within the very same river valleys of the Rhine and Rhone rivers! (As a total aside I’ve also been formulating a secret plan to backpack from the headwaters of the Rhine to the headwaters of the Rhone river, shhhhh). ![]() Granted, T&E and Y&Y are both quite abstract as far as modern hobby games go, but their settings nevertheless lend a touch of history to the overall gameplay experience.īy happenstance, and sometime well after my initial blog post unveiling this game idea, I listened to an episode of Dan Carlin’s Hardscore History called the Celtic Holocost. But I needed a clearer setting in which to ground the game beyond just the river names and geographic region. Rhine & Rhone has a nice ring to it, and of course geographically fits into the Knizia trend quite nicely. Lake Toma (Tomasee) is the official headwaters of the Rhine river. ![]()
